Minecraft Java Edition is Moving House!

The way you log into Minecraft: Java Edition will soon change forever.

As you know, Microsoft is the primary company behind Mojang and Minecraft. Up till now, you have been able to log into your Minecraft account and play the game, with either a Mojang Account, or one of the original Premium/Legacy accounts.

Sometime in 2021, both of these methods will no longer be available, therefore it will be mandatory for you to migrate over to the Microsoft Accounts system.

What does this mean?

Moving forward, all Minecraft and Mojang games will be under the one account and have the one password to access them. This will be a Microsoft account of your choice.

The benefits to migrating include:-

  • Improved Security with Two-Factor Authentication (A free option available to all Microsoft Account owners).
  • Same Email and Password as you use for Bedrock Edition and for playing on the Xbox.
  • Improved Parental Controls to help keep your kids safe while playing online.
  • Chat and Invitation Blocking.

Why can I not just keep things as they are?

You can choose not to migrate. You won’t lose your account, you just won’t be able to use it after a certain time. Exactly how long is unknown.

If you want to keep playing the game, you must migrate your account over to a Microsoft Account. You can use an account you already own, or create a new one. You will also have the option of changing your email address and password, both of which should be kept up-to-date in order to keep your account secure.

Migration sounds like a lot of work and hassle, what do I get out of it?

How difficult the task is will depend on how good with technology you are, but please be assured that every effort will be made by Mojang and Microsoft to make it as easy as possible for everyone, and best of all, it only needs to be done once.

Along with the above mentioned benefits, the migration will also earn you a free cape to wear and show to new players that you were there for the big move, along with perhaps a few other things that will be revealed at a later date.

I love playing Minecraft, how long do I have to Migrate?

The migration process will not start until sometime in 2021, so you still have some time to prepare for it.

Since there are so many people who love playing Minecraft, the Migration will happen in batches. You will receive an email with more information and clear instructions once your account is ready for Migration. It would be a good idea to check that your email address is up to date on your Mojang account so you do not miss this important email.

You won’t need to migrate straight away, you will have a few months, but it would be best not to leave it too late to avoid losing access to your favourite game.
